FPV Rules & Regulations
Flying legally protects the hobby for everyone. Here is what you need to know before you arm.
Why Regulations Matter
FPV flying exists in a legal framework that is still evolving. Understanding the rules keeps you legal, keeps airspace safe, and protects the hobby from unnecessary restrictions.
FAA Requirements
Register Your Drone
Any drone over 250g must be registered with the FAA. Registration is $5 and valid for 3 years. Display your registration number on the aircraft.
TRUST Certification
The FAA TRUST test is free and required for recreational flyers. It covers basic airspace rules and safety. Takes about 30 minutes.
Altitude Limits
400 feet AGL maximum for recreational flying in uncontrolled airspace. Lower limits apply near airports and in controlled airspace.
Visual Line of Sight
You must maintain visual line of sight unless you have a waiver. FPV goggles alone do not satisfy this requirement — a visual observer is needed.
LAANC Authorization
Flying in controlled airspace requires LAANC authorization. Use the FAA DroneZone app or Aloft to request authorization before flying near airports.
Regulation Tips
- Download the B4UFLY and Aloft apps — they show real-time airspace restrictions anywhere you plan to fly.
- Join the AMA or a recognized Community Based Organization for additional legal protections.
- Local ordinances can be stricter than FAA rules — always check city and county regulations for your flying location.
- Keep your registration documentation in your field bag and be prepared to show it if asked.
