Freestyle Flying Guide

Freestyle is the art form of FPV — smooth lines, creative maneuvers, and flow through any environment.

What is Freestyle FPV?

Freestyle is about creative expression through flight. There are no gates or race clocks — just you, your quad, and the environment. The goal is smooth, intentional movement that looks as good as it feels.

Essential Maneuvers

360 Roll

A full rotation on the roll axis. The first trick every freestyle pilot learns — clean and fast with no altitude loss.

Backflip / Frontflip

Full rotation on the pitch axis. Backflips are more natural; frontflips require more commitment. Both should be crisp and height-neutral.

Split-S

Half roll then pull through a half loop. The foundation of direction reversal in freestyle. Master this before anything else.

Power Loop

Full vertical loop with a throttle cut at the top. One of the most satisfying moves in freestyle when executed cleanly.

Matty Flip

Fly over an obstacle, performs a forward flip, and dive backwards underneath the same obstacle, often described as a "backwards power loop".

Snap Roll

Fast, precise 360 roll on one axis. Works as a standalone trick or a connector between other maneuvers.

Camera Angle Tips

Most freestyle pilots run 25–35 degrees of camera tilt. Higher angles give more forward visibility and make speed look dramatic on footage. Lower angles produce a more cinematic, floaty look. Start at 25 degrees and adjust based on your flying style and how your footage looks on review.

Freestyle Tips

  • Film every session and review footage critically — your eyes in the goggles and your footage are two different things.
  • Fly spots that inspire you. Environment drives creativity in freestyle.
  • Master one maneuver fully before moving to the next. Sloppy tricks compound into sloppy flying.
  • Watch top freestyle pilots and study their lines, not just their tricks.
